How to get to the Caribbean IslandsTHE VIRGIN ISLANDS St. Thomas (STT) is the gateway to the Caribbean. Cyril King airport is a modern facility that can accommodate medium sized commercial jetliners and most major airlines have direct flights into St. Thomas. American, United, US Airways and Spirit Air are some of the more popular. Visitors can also fly into San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU) and island-hop over to St. Thomas on American Eagle's turbo-props or on Cape-Air, a small local airline. Charterers starting their trips in Tortola, BVI (EIS) can do so by flying into San Juan or St. Thomas and then on to Tortola using American Eagle or Cape-Air. Another reasonable way to get to Tortola is by using the local Ferry service, Quite reasonably priced, these are regular scheduled departures and arrivals that run like clockwork. ST MAARTEN AND ST BART For mainland US travelers, American Airlines has direct flights fom Miami (MIA) and one-stop flights through San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU) to St. Maarten (SXM) There are regularly scheduled and frequent flights from St. Maarten to St. Bart (SBH) on small aircraft operated by Windward Islands Airways. (Winair) European travelers looking for direct flights to SXM should look at Air France and KLM. MARTINIQUE US travelers flying to Martinique (FDF) should look at American Airlines out of Miami (MIA) with a stop and change of plane in Santo Domingo (SDQ). European travelers should look at Air France from Paris Orly (ORY). ST VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES US travelers should look at American Airlines and LIAT (Leeward Island Air Transport); both have stopovers; AA stops in San Juan; LIAT has a stop-over in Port of Spain, Trinidad or Bridgetown, Barbados.. European travelers should look at British Midland airlines out of Manchester and they should expect a change to LIAT in Barbados.
